Anyone wanna guess how long until StuffIt becomes completely obsolete?
I'm picking late-ish 2008.

I say you're off by at least 5 years. Look closer to 2003. The fact
that some people keep using it out of habit doesn't make it any less
obsolete.

If I might (pardon my ignorance), what are the alternatives for
UNSTUFFING .sit archives?

Why, there are no alternatives. That's sort of the point - the Stuffit
file format is proprietary and requires the vendor's software to
extract. That's why a lot of people are not creating new .sit files and
instead using less risky formats like zip.

Cheers,

Chris

The answer to that would be not creating the stupid things in the first
place.

With the availability of high-speed internet it's all rather irrelevant
anyway - nearly every bit of software I download is packaged in dmg
format these days (which suits me just fine).

Cheers,

Andy.

The people doing the downloading don't have much say in this, except to
not patronize vendors who use it.

UNSTUFFING .sit archives?
My alternative is to use command-delete to compress them further, or
just not bother downloading them if I notice it first. I even ran
across a developer the other day <http://www.gradekeeper.com/> who is so
set in their ways that they actually expect me to bother with a .hqx
download!

Binhex? Urck!

Ah the 'good old days' of files ending with sit.hqx...

And then having the archive open with Tex-Edit....

Um, as long as I continue to come across some .sit archive somewhere
that's of value to me, I'll continue to need Stuffit Expander
occasionally.
